ARCHIVAL PIGMENT PRINT ON HAHNEMUHLE PHOTO RAG 308GSM
30 X 42 CM
EDITION / 500
A representation in red, black, green and blue Biro of Russia's iconic matryoshka dolls. Inspired by a Russian doll from Jane's own collection, painted with the tranquil scene of Ivan Shishkin’s Morning in a Pine Forest, 1889, one of Russia’s most popular paintings. The forest is layered with an image of Red Army soldiers fighting their way through Stalingrad during WWII.
This piece symbolises the brutalisation of many young girls and women by soldiers of the Red Army as they surged towards Berlin, in revenge for war crimes perpetrated by the German Army against Russian civilians. Layering a self-portrait over the Russian doll’s face symbolises that females of any age group including children are not exempt from crimes against women during conflict.
